Summer Camp 2015 – What a Week

Another year and another great Summer Camp to add to the groups growing history. The weather also presented a challenge, a lot of rain greeted us and challenged us on day one, then two days of high winds battered us but morale stayed strong throughout. We came out the other side with a few remaining days of glorious weather, just in time for our Beaver’s to make their entrance to camp for a night. With the Beavers in attendance we saw our highest number of young people attending this camp, long may it continue it’s been a joy to introduce and enhance the camping experience to so many young people this past week.

21st Medway Represent Medway Scouting on Remembrance Sunday

Beavers, Cubs, Scouts, Explorers, Leaders and Committee Members from the 21st Medway Scout Group ready to set off on today’s Remembrance Sunday Parade and Service in Rochester. (We were restricted to 50 by seating in the cathedral.) Our flag carriers joined standards from the Royal British Legion, armed forces and cadets, right at the front of the parade. The Group attended representing some 1,900 young people and adults involved with Scouting in the Medway Towns District. A very proud moment for our group.

The Rain Couldn’t Dampen Our Spirits

This year’s Summer Camp at Gilwell Park was the Groups busiest yet, we had over 40 campers throughout the week. We arrived on the Sunday during a torrential downpour that eventually eased, pitching tents avoiding puddles was interesting but we got everything up in good time. The whole week was a mixture of heavy downpours and sunshine, and despite the rains best efforts campers spirits remained high and everybody came home with a smile on their face. Some of this years highlights include: Dual presentation of the Scouts ‘Best All Rounder Camper’ trophy, after much deliberation the Scout Leaders decided that two of the Scouts Jack & Noah would have to share. The equivalent Cub trophy was won by Hannah. We also we’re able to hand out our first ‘Time on Water’ badges newly introduced by the Scout Association.

With Group numbers growing so fast we hope to see even more happy campers next summer.

Scouts Bring Home the Arrowhead Trophy

January’s Disctrict Scout competition ‘Arrowhead’ at Buckmore Park Scout Campsite has to one of the Group’s highlights of the year so far as the 21st Medway Scout Troop combined with members of the 26th Medway Scout Troop won this years challenge by a single point.

It was a fantastic achievement for both Group as they battled through the mud to navigate the park completing a number of mental and physical team challenges. They arose victorious over 13 other teams, earning points for their ability to complete the tasks their teamwork and their navigation skills on way the round.

It’s the first time our Group has won this competition, and despite sharing it with the 26th we still think our Scouts made a massive contribution to the teams success last night. So well done to Jack and Jason who brought home our first ‘Arrowhead’ trophy.

21st Medway Brave The Cold at Winter Camp 14

This year the 3 Scouts, 5 Explorers and a handful of Leaders decided to brave the cold with over 3000 other Scouters at Gilwell Park’s annual Winter Camp. The wet weather over Christmas had turned the whole site into a mud bath but it seemed to add to the atmosphere of the event. The Scouts and Explorers were able to take part in new activities such as White Water Rafting, High Ropes and Quad Biking.

Despite the wet and the cold everyone had a great time and we’ll be returning next year with hopefully more Scouts and Explorers. You can see some of our photos from the event on our Facebook Page.

Mass Investiture Night

Last night the Group invested 3 new Beaver Scouts, 2 Cub Scouts moving from Beavers and 1 new Cub Scout, 2 new Explorers and another 2 affirmed their promise and 4 Leaders. Some of the Leader investitures where somewhat overdue but on occasion where we could invest so many members in a single night was worth making them wait for it.

2013 has been a fantastic year for the group and has seen our numbers grow even further in both young people and adults.

Theme Park Camp Wasn’t Quite A Wash Out

At the end of September Cubs, Scouts and Explorers embarked on a camp in wet and windy conditions for the sole purpose of spending the Saturday at Chessington World of Adventures and having a great time. We had an excellent time despite having small numbers, and a great sing song round the fire after our day in the park. We hope to see more of our young people attend the next one.
