Akela stands in the middle of the hall.
Akela: Pack! Pack! Pack!
Cubs: PACK!
Cubs form a smart circle around Akela.
Akela puts his arms straight out either side, and then slowly brings them down to his sides. As Akela's arms come down, Cubs slowly squat down, hands between their legs touching the floor and backs straight, all looking at Akela.
Akela nods.
Cubs say together: Ah--kay--la! We--ll do--our BEST!
Cubs stand up straight with arms by their sides.
Duty Sixer salutes.
Duty Sixer: CUBS! Do your BEST!
Cubs: We WILL do our BEST!
Akela returns the salute, then everybody brings their arms down together.
Akela: Pack face the flag.
Everybody not already facing the flag turns towards it.
At the same time the Duty Sixer walks around the edge of the circle to the flag. The Duty Sixer smartly breaks the flag, steps back and everybody salutes the flag together. (See note on saluting.)
The Duty Sixer returns to their place in the circle. When the Duty Sixer is back.
Akela: Pack. Stand at ease.
Akela may then announce what is happening this evening, or give instructions on what to do next. When finished…
Akela: Pack. Pack alert.
Everybody comes to the alert position.
Akela: Pack. Fall out.
Everybody turns to the right, and then walks off to do what they should be doing next.
Notes:
When saluting the hand should go up in a wide circular motion, and come back down straight and close to the body. In your head think; ‘Up, two, three, four. Down, two, three, four.’
The alert position is standing up straight, with feet together and hands down by the sides.
The at ease position is feet apart and hands clasped behind the back.
