Cubs

cubs logoCubs or Cub Scouts is a section for 8 to 10 & a half year olds and provides a fun, adventurous and balanced award scheme centered around adventure and learning. This section provides it’s young people with an age appropriate level of adventure, outdoors experience and scouting values.

The Pack meets on Wednesday evenings between 6.25 and 7.45 p.m. and is made up of up to six Sixes led by a Sixer, usually an older Cub, and is assisted by a Seconder. A Leader who is known by the Jungle Book name of Akela (the male wolf in the pack that found and reared Mowgli -an obvious association with the original Section name, Wolf Cubs) runs the Pack. A number of Assistant Leaders who also have Jungle Book names, older Scouts who are working towards awards, and additional adult helpers may aid the Leader in running the Pack.

The Pack participates in a varied programme that involves ‘learning through fun’ theme. Many activities may be undertaken including hiking, camping, backwoods cooking, visits from various services such as the police or Royal Air Force and, most importantly, lots of fun and games.

The activities are usually linked to the Cub Scout Training Scheme, and as the young people move through the Scheme they are able to gain badges to wear on their uniform. There are many different badges, some general and others more specific. More information on these awards can be found in the Cub Scout Power Pack or the Cub Scout Welcome booklet. During the year, the boys have many opportunities including the chance to attend the weeklong summer camp, usually within a couple of hour’s drive, and/or local weekend camp’s. We also participate in District-run events such as football, cross-country, and quiz nights.

As a new member we will normally give you a couple of weeks to settle in, although you will be expected to pay for any extra activities such as swimming, camps etc. Hopefully you will want to continue at which point you will start paying subs and will need to get a uniform.

Our Cub Pack is presided over by our Cub Leader Sean aka ‘Akela’, Assistant Leaders Jon, Lisa, Emma & Ruth we’re always on the lookout for more Cubs to join our Pack for more information on Cub Scouts check out the official scouts.org.uk section info page here.
